Damn song be gone …or not

For some unexplainable reason the past couple days I have had part of a song playing over and over in my mind. Apparently this rather annoying affliction is so common that it effects 98% of all people at some point in time. And it even has its own fancy-shmancy medical name. It is called having earworms.

Yes, I did say earworms …which sounds incredibly disgusting if you ask me. But earworms aren’t actually gross little wormy creatures that crawl down your ear canals and burrow around inside your noggin.

Instead earworms are song lyrics, jingles or tunes that get lodged in your mind and play on mental continuum …until such point that you go absolutely positively stark raving mad or alternatively they just magically disappear.

Anyway, my particular earworm has been caused by a song that until today I had never even heard in its entirety.

While it is true that I have never been a full-on major Katy Perry fan, I have to admit that after watching the video and listening to the lyrics I was rather amused. Apparently my dirty little pervy mind does know exactly what it likes…

You make me feel like
I’m living a teenage dream
The way you turn me on
I can’t sleep
Let’s run away
And don’t ever look back
Ever look back

My heart stops
When you look at me
Just one touch…

  1. i 'hear' that.

hahahaha, sorry. i'm super lame today.

but i wake up with a song playing in my head every. single. morning.

seriously. i don't know what that's called, but it's true. sometimes it's the same song a few days in a row, sometimes it's a song i heard the night before. but it's really kind of annoying sometimes, because then i 'hear' it so much in my head that i start getting fucking sick of the song.

you have inspired me, empress. i think i will post my 'song of the day' that i wake up with every day.

  3. Earworms?! That's a yucky name for something that isn't an actual worm, lol.

  4. @steph gas: Annoying isn't it? I look forward to checking out your song Steph.

@Mynx: Yes, damn that Katy Perry. She is turning out to be as addictive as the crack dust that is sprinkled all over the Cheetos that I can't stop eating!

@Liz: I know, right? Who comes up with those dumb arse technical names? ; )

  5. OMG this is now my newest favorite Katy Perry song! I know like everywhere that video was filmed. I was like "Hey! That's 20 miles from home :D" And I am not the biggest Katy Perry fan but that song is just awesome!

  6. I also am inflicted with what I now know to be called earworms. Previously I just referred to it as my own private hell.

Basically because my favorite songs are not the ones that get stuck in my head. It's the worthless commercial jingles or syrupy bubble gum pop crap you hear by accident throughout the day. Do you think Mozart had to put up with this shit?

  7. I can totally relate! I always tell people that my brain is like a broken radio that's stuck on "scan" mode. I swear there's a different song stuck in my head every hour!

There was only one time when I had one song stuck in my head for what felt like MONTHS! I seriously thought I was going to go crazy! It was from a commercial, and I grew to hate that song and everything associated with it.

"Earworms." Interesting. I'm glad to finally have a name for that particular affliction. :)

  8. @The Adorkable Ditz: Glad you enjoy the song... I still can't get it out of my head but at least now after seeing the video I at least think it is a bit cooler.

@Simple Dude: Hopefully Mozart did not have to put up with that shit but then again him being afflicted with earworms would explain a lot!

@Candice: See, I'm not just snarky. Sometimes I actually try to add educational value to all of my bitching. xo

  10. "He's climbin' in yo windows, he's snatchin' yo people up, tryin' to rape 'em so y'all need to hide your kids, hide your wife"

Since the day it came out. Every damn day these lyrics cross my mind and, if I'm alone, I'll sing them. Before that it was the Double Rainbow song. I'm a sucker for YouTube memes.

  11. @Hotcakes: Thanks for stopping by and for the blog love! Yay! Yes, earworms. Who knew?

@Erica: I'm thinking that a Katy Perry diddy is far more preferable than the words you have rolling around inside your head. Yikes!

  12. I have had a chronic case of earworms for as long as I can remember. Mostly they are of the David Bowie/ The Who variety so I don't mind too too much. Apparently the cure is to listen to the actual song...?

  13. earworm? earworm?!? Oh, scientific community, you slay me...

...and really, really gross me out because then I think of ear tapeworms. Shudder.

So my number-one trick for exterminating earworms is to sing the Ma-Na-Ma-Na song from the Muppet Show. That song : earworms :: Midol : cramps.

  14. @Corianda: I gave the 'listen to the actual song' cure a try but now I have the song even more stuck in my head! At least I'm enjoying it though...

    -----------------
@Nicki: Ear tapeworms, yikes! HA! I shall have to try out the earworm midol cure.

  15. Well now I finally know what this problem is called! LOL!! I used to get that b-52's song Love Shack stuck in my head. What a horrible song and I couldn't make it go away!!!

  16. @Anonymous: I'm with you. That song sucks the big one for sure!

  17. Lol. I don't know the song, but I hate that thing where they get stuck in my head. One culprit for me is "abracadabra" by Steve Miller.

    I heat up. I can't cool down....

That will be in my head for two days now. Thanks a lot.

  19. Great! Now it's stuck in MY head.

I will get your heart racing
    In my skin tight jeans
    Be a teenage dream tonight.

Let you put your hands on me
    In my skin tight jeans
    Be a teenage dream tonight.

Thanks. What's next? "Baby Got Back"?

  20. @Shawna: Sorry to have infected you with the "Teenage Dream" earworm. ...I bet after baking that yummy birthday cake for your man, if you sing that song for him he just might be wanting some of that "Baby Got Back".
    Get it girl! ; )
