Everything can change in a minute

Yesterday I was fairly gutted to hear that my adopted country and hometown, Christchurch, New Zealand was rocked by a major earthquake. This sort of news is something no one wants to hear, especially about a place so near and dear to one’s heart.

Below is a video highlighting some of quake’s the aftermath:

For those of you who haven’t had the good fortune to visit the amazingly awesome country of New Zealand, I can tell you with great enthusiasm that there is a very good reason NZ is fondly referred to as ‘Godzone’. Not only is New Zealand stunningly beautiful but so too is the spirit of its people.

Kiwis are hardy souls and no doubt my fellow Cantabrians are already focused on productively moving forward …which is but another reason why I ♥ New Zealand.

  2. Earthquakes are one of the worst things to happen to any community - you never see them coming. At least with fires or hurricanes, or even tornadoes, at least some warning is involved. I have only felt minor ones, didn't even break windows. But I still hold my breath while driving over the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, as it had a large section collapse in the 1989 earthquake. My heart goes out to New Zealand, a place I'd very much like to visit one day.

  3. I'm so sorry that happened to your beloved country. At least it doesn't look like too much damage was done. They should be back on their feet in no time! :)

  4. @Miranda: So true and such as shame. Christchurch is known as 'The Garden City' and at present it is going to need a lot of work.

@J.Day: I totally get chills thinking about the SF earthquake. That was a shocking one wasn't it? Thanks for your kind thoughts regarding NZ. I hope one day you have the opportunity to visit.

@The Adorkable Ditz: Damage to people was small but the City's infrastructure took a real beating. Civil engineers are coming in to assess the damage to buildings, roads and bridges - many which have been taken a real beating. Apparently nearly everyone's chimneys came down as well and there is flooding due to ruptured water mains. Not pretty at all.

Thank you for your encouraging words! xo

  5. Thanks for the words. In CHCH we are in pretty good shape considering. Takes more than 7.1 to devastate a Kiwi City!

  6. I was just as shocked and distressed to hear about this too. All I could think about was if my Kiwi friends were ok and if I had decided to go this year instead of last year I could have witnessed it first hand. It's crazy how life is...

  8. @The Blast: Too right mate! I'm proud to call myself an honorary kiwi.

@Kait: I hope your friends are safe and well. Mother Nature is unpredictable and always there to remind us just how precious life really is.

@Mynx: Thanks for the hugs and well wishes! While my heart is (and will probably always be) in NZ, I don't currently reside there. I'm pleased to report that everyone near and dear seems to be accounted for. ...Definitely go for a visit when you have the chance. You will not be disappointed.
