Weird News: Rodent Edition

Talk about curiosity killing the rat. In Miami on the night of May 1, 2011, a rodent with a major death wish climbed to the top of a street light pole and stupidly proceeded to chew through a fusible link. Being that electrical fuses and rat teeth make for a very poor match, it was only a short time before an explosion ensued. With a snap, crackle and pop, out went all of the street lights and down from the light post came the smoking, singed and very dead rat.

A group of equally curious people from a nearby bar went out to investigate the then dark intersection where the explosion had occurred. One of the group members made the disgusting discovery of the electrocuted rat with its fur still smoking. Unfortunately around the very same time two vehicles collided in the darkness and hit several of the pedestrians. Sadly, one person died at the scene and five others were rushed to nearby hospitals …all because one rat randomly decided to play his own version of rodent Russian roulette.

While the chances of something bizarre like this ever happening again are about a gazillion to one, be safe my lovelies and watch out for those crazy kamikaze rats just waiting to wreak havoc on the world!

  1. A scourge on humanity, those blasted rodents! I wouldn't be at all surprised if bringing pain & destruction on man was their main life's purpose.

  2. Did you ever see the show "Dead Like Me?"

    After reading your story, I got a flashback of that show. Sounds like s DLM moment for sure...

  3. @Vinny C: Too right. And yet another reason to dislike rats!

    @Lost.in.Idaho: Not familiar with the show but hopefully the flashback was a good one.

    @Rabbit: Tee hee. It is totally understandable!

  5. You have to watch out for rodents and wires. Back when I was an airfield electrician, we used to have to play groundhog polo about every 2 weeks, or do a lot of splicing work.

  7. @Oilfield Trash: Glad you think so, otherwise I would have felt a tad guilty for posting this ; )

    @Danger Boy: Goundhog polo? Interesting but probably not fun for the rodents.

    @Bruce: No worries. I think we are all laughing just a little bit. Sad for the victims but ironic none the less.

  9. Visions of Ratatouille roasting the mushroom on the old ladies' chimney...too bad this wasn't a cartoon. I'm saddened that people were injured and killed because of a charbroiled rodent.

  10. Well the creepy picture didn't make me laugh, but that damn electrocuted rodent did. I actually kind of thought of the cat that was electrocuted from Christmas tree lights in National Lampoons Christmas Vacation. But Dead Like Me works, too. LOL

    @S: Very sad indeed but these sorts of strange events are how legends are born.

    @J.Day: Ha! Crispy kitty ; )

  17. This is the exact reason why when something explodes or looks exciting, I wait to actually see it. It's not that I'm not curious, I just always have a feeling that something bad will happen. And see? It does. Those poor people; and that stupid rat.
